Egypt & Nile River Cruise 2010

September 2010 - EGYPT

72 Dallas Ski Club members headed for the Middle East for a river boat cruise up the ancient Nile River where Cleopatra and Mark Anthony once sailed.  We toured the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, and pushed our way past dozens of peddlers selling just about everything but a kitchen sink!

After arriving in Cairo, we boarded another flight to Luxor where we were taken to our river boat for our adventure up the Nile. The last of our group arrived on the boat around 3 am after a very long day and several flights to get from Dallas to Luxor.  At last all of the DSC members were together on our boat for the next four days, sailing from Luxor to Aswan. Each day we had excursions to see the ruins of temples thousands of years old and other ancient dwellings.

We, being the largest group, had to split into two groups, each with their own Egyptologist to guide us and educate us on the history of the Temples we toured.  At the end of our 4 day river cruise we landed at Aswan. We started a 4 hour drive to Abu Simble at 1:00 am the next morning to see the Temple that was cut from its original location and raised higher to avoid being underwater when the High Dam in Aswan was built to create Lake Nasser. And, you guessed it; it was a 4 hour bus ride back to our boat where we spent the night before flying to Cairo the next morning where we stayed an the Cairo Hilton for the next three nights.
While in Cairo, we saw the great Pyramids, the Sphinx and the stepped Pyramids. We also had a day trip to Alexandria and the very ancient city of Memphis. We also toured the Egypt Museum to see the fabulous treasures of ancient Egypt which included the Treasure of Tutankhamen, considered the most sensational discovery in the history of archaeology. However, a few of us discovered our own sensational site just across the street from our hotel one evening – a McDonalds' restaurant! Dinner was a big Mac, fries and large drink, taken to our rooms and scarfed down quickly!  We had good times, we met new members of the DSC, and we laughed and poked fun at each other and hopefully formed new friendships which will last a lifetime.
