Dallas Ski Club members don't need snow to have fun and enjoy nature. The snorkeling and scuba trip to Cayman Island under the able leadership of Steve Abrey was a great success. Guy Huntley's picture gallery describes the trip and captures the happy, smiling faces.
There were many highlights and each member took advantage of what the Island had to offer, from the beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise water to under the water with the variety of corals and tropical fish. The lowlight was that George Kelly was ill and missed the trip. We missed you, George.
On the first day the scuba divers enjoyed a good dive and saw a large sea turtle and the rest enjoyed the beach. The afternoon boat trip to the sand banks to swim with the stingrays started with a drenching squall, but this was soon forgotten when we experienced the stingrays. We fed them and played with them. It was truly awesome. On the ride back we were treated to seeing many large iguanas on the banks of the canal.
The next day was more beach time, snorkeling, diving and, of course, shopping. The scuba divers were pleased with their guide and had an excellent experience. The snorklers had a variety of places to explore, from a beautiful beach and reef off the cemetery to a 1939 Cuban sugar boat wrecked in the harbor.
Watching Jeannie Bigley with a bag of frozen peas feeding the hundreds of colorful fish was extra special as the fish were nibbling on her green swimsuit ties. Mary Lou Alford swam up to her and pointed out that a large barracuda was also following her!
Bob and June Williams were very generous in hosting our happy hour and inviting us to use the beach and amenities at their condo. They were assisted in their hospitality by Lorraine West and Bob Cox who were staying with them.
Loyd Braffett stepped aboard a submersible and dropped 100 feet below the surface looking out the large windows at the spectacular reef fish and coral.
The abundance and diversity of dining choices plus the native Cayman specialties made this a "foodies" fantasy. Governor Perry agreed with our choice of restaurants and seemed to be following us even on the return flights home.
Vivien Benjamin enjoyed watching the delight on Kim Hampton's face as she snorkeled and saw more fish than she had ever seen before. Kim got a kick out of watching Vivien devour her lobster "at the all you can eat" lobster night. Steve Abrey and Louise Huntley made us proud at the limbo contest at the Luau.
The best highlight of all was making new friends, sharing experiences and laughter, and all of the people on another well-organized DSC trip.
